Welcome to the New England Swing Dance Network

The New England Swing Dance Network website (NESD.net) is a resource for dancers seeking places to learn and/or dance West Coast Swing in the New England area.

This website has been created to both help new dancers learn more about West Coast Swing, and provide a central location for information about WCS classes, workshops, dances, and special events in New England.

Class Levels & Content
Beginners are welcome and encouraged. No partner is necessary. Instructors are constantly rotating partners throughout the lesson so that students learn to lead or follow with many different dancers. However, a couple taking lessons together are not required to rotate.

Beginner classes focus on teaching the basic rhythm patterns and lead/follow moves of West Coast Swing. Intermediate and advanced level classes focus on more complicated patterns and moves, leverage and connection, syncopations, musicality, styling and fine-tuning of technique. All levels are designed to help dancers master the concept of lead/ follow, which is fundamental to the dance itself, since it is intended to be a "spontaneous" interpretation of the music, rather than a specific routine of choreographed moves (although routines are used at the highest level of competition).

Music
West Coast Swing music typically includes contemporary and traditional R&B, funk, hip hop, pop, & blues. WCS music generally does not include big band style swing music typical of East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop.

Price
Many classes are designed so that you pay only when you attend, with no advance payment or commitment required. Prices vary by location, but generally range between $8 and $15 for one or more lessons.

Dances
Classes are often followed by social dancing, which is a great opportunity to practice what you have learned and enjoy dancing in a casual, social atmosphere. Additional dances are often scheduled on weekend nights as well.

Parking & Other Amenities
Many locations are air conditioned during the summer months. Parking is free in most locations. Some locations have a cash bar and/or snacks available.
